WALZ SIEZENHEIM STADIUM - SALZBURG
May 6th, 2008
The EURO 2008 stadium Wals-Siezenheim is a 30,000 capacity football stadium in the Wals-Siezenheim district on the outskirts of Salzburg. During UEFA EURO 2008™ it will be one of four host venues in Austria. The stadium was finished in March 2003 and is built on the site of the old Lehener stadium. It is the home ground of Red Bull Salzburg and is the only Bundesliga stadium in Austria with an artificial pitch.
Adaptation for the European Championship
The stadium’s capacity was increased to 30,000 seats specially for the European Championship with the construction of an additional tier. Natural turf will also be laid over the artificial pitch during the tournament. The extension works on the stadium began on the 1st of April 2006 and finished in July 2007. The first match to be played post-extension was fought on the 25th of July 2007 between Red Bull Salzburg and Arsenal. The friendly resulted in a 1:0 win for Red Bull Salzburg in front of a packed-out stadium.
Transport Connections
The stadium can be reached on Bus line no. 1 (from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof) and the 28 (from the centre). These services will be more frequent on match days.
The Schnellbahn train (S3) also travels to the stadium, stopping at Salzburg-Taxham-Europark station. Trains run on this line every hour.
Before and after events at the stadium additional extra services will operate. The journey between the Salzburg Hauptbahnhof (central station) and the stadium takes less than 5 minutes. At full capacity an S-bahn train will travel between the stadium and the Hauptbahnhof every 15 minutes.
