post CRISTIANO RONALDO LOOKS TO SET ASIDE DISTRACTIONS BEFORE THE EURO 2008 TOURNAMENT

Cristiano Ronaldo has a chance to show his European Championship preparations are not being unsettled by speculation about his club future when Portugal meets Georgia in a friendly Saturday.

The standout winger is his country’s main hope as it looks to repeat its appearance in the tournament final four years ago.

But since Ronaldo helped Manchester United to the Champions League title last week, the 23-year-old has been at the centre of a spat between the Red Devils and Real Madrid, which has expressed interest in luring him away from Old Trafford.

Ronaldo has been secluded with the Portuguese squad at its training camp in Viseu, a northern Portuguese city, for the past week.

Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said he had taken Ronaldo aside and given him advice in recent days, though he didn’t reveal what he had told the player.

“We’ve talked a lot. He’s very calm about all that’s been happening in his life. He’s feeling fine,” Scolari said at a news conference in Viseu.

The player, who wears Portugal’s No. 7 jersey and is a hot favourite to become FIFA player of the year, got eight goals in the qualifying campaign - more than double the next-best Portuguese scorers.

As he looked to collect his 55th cap, though, the tension between the English and Spanish champions intruded on Portugal’s preparations.

Madrid was reportedly willing to pay a world-record transfer fee and almost double Ronaldo’s salary. United threatened to report Real Madrid to FIFA.

Scolari is eager to prove that Portugal is not a one-man show.

“One player can’t carry 20 others on his back, but 20 can carry one,” the Brazilian said. “We want 20 helping one, not one helping 20.”

Ronaldo’s goalscoring skills are crucial for a team that, for all its flair, has had trouble putting the ball in the net.

In qualifying, Portugal won only half of its 14 games and finished second in its group behind Poland.

With Ronaldo deployed on the right flank, Benfica’s Nuno Gomes is expected to play at centre forward and Atletico Madrid’s Simao Sabrosa on the left wing.

Gomes and Sabrosa each grabbed three goals in qualifying.

Against Georgia in Viseu, Scolari is likely to make several halftime substitutions, possibly replacing Ronaldo and Sabrosa with Nani, Ronaldo’s teammate at Old Trafford, and FC Porto’s Ricardo Quaresma.

Doubts linger about the defensive lineup. Real Madrid’s Pepe and Porto’s Bruno Alves are competing for a place in central defence alongside Chelsea’s Ricardo Carvalho.

Jostling for the right back position are Jose Bosingwa, who recently transferred to Chelsea, and Valencia’s Miguel.

Portugal placed third at Euro 2000 and was runner-up four years ago when it hosted the tournament.

It opens its Euro 2008 campaign against Turkey in Switzerland on June 7.
