Vienna is the capital of the Republic of Austria. It is the country’s largest city and seat of many international organisations (official UN seat, OSCE headquarters). Its 1.67 million inhabitants live on an area of 414 square kilometres.
Vienna has a special position in Austria, as it is both a city and a federal province. The role of Vienna’s mayor is also as governor of the province, while the City Council also acts as a Provincial Parliament. According to the provisions of the federal constitution, the municipal structure of the City of Vienna is composed of the City Council, the City Senate and the Mayor. The City Administration (Magistrat) administers the city. The City Council consists of 100 members and constitutes the city’s highest official body.
