The first three seasons during his professional career yielded no playing time in the Bundesliga while playing for Werder Bremen. He had no professional on-field playing experience until the 2004/2005 season while playing for Alemannia Aachen. Rolfes played 32 games during his first season for Bayer Leverkusen while playing in only 28 games on Alemannia Aachen.
He made his international debut for the Germany national football team in a friendly against Denmark on 28 March 2007.
