MORTEN OLSEN - DENMARK: " SPAIN OFFERS EXCITEMENT AT EURO 2008"
June 10th, 2008
Tuesday was set to be a "great football day," Danish national coach Morten Olsen said in antipication of Spain’s Group D match against Russia.
Olsen, who pens a blog in tabloid BT, said Spain was "the last of the big gold favourites" to enter the stage at the European Championships noting that other favourites like Portugal, France and Italy had already begun the tournament.
For Euro 2008, he said Spain "for the first time in many years" has a game plane, and play as a team. Previous Spanish teams have often comprised the country’s top players, but not always played as a team.
Olsen said he admired how Spanish coach Luis Aragones has created the "best midfield" in the current championships with speedy, technical players including Xavi, Andres Iniesta, David Silva and Cesc Fabregas.
Spain is "exciting, something we Danes have experienced," Olsen said referring to his team’s defeats by Spain in the qualifications.
Olsen added he was less impressed over Spain’s defensive line.
In the same group, reigning European champions Greece take on Sweden on Tuesday. The two teams have plenty of routine, but Olsen said he doubted Greece would be able to defend their title.
