Heinz Schaden

Salzburg is the capital of the state of Salzburg and with a population of 150,000 is the fourth biggest city in Austria. The birth place of Mozart, it has been chosen as one of the Austrian host cities alongside Vienna, Klagenfurt and Innsbruck. The city’s mayor, Dr Heinz Schaden, explained to euro2008.com what UEFA EURO 2008™ means to Salzburg.

Naturally, I am filled with immense pride that Salzburg has been given the opportunity to host a major event. Following the amazing success of the FIFA World Cup in Germany, I hope that UEFA EURO 2008™ in Austria and Switzerland can be equally successful. For that reason I am looking forward to some great games and a friendly tournament which will live long in the memories of the players and fans.
Attractive city
Salzburg will offer excitement for all our visitors, both inside and outside the stadium. Aside from the football and all that goes with it, Salzburg is a city with plenty to offer. With a marvellous ‘Altstadt’, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, exhibitions, museums, concerts and beautiful surroundings, Salzburg will be the ideal place to relax after the matchday excitement.
Public viewing
There will also be the opportunity to watch the games in fan zones. During the World Cup in Germany, games were shown on screens around the cities and we are keen to do the same here in Salzburg. We already have experience when it comes to the live screening of major events, as every year we set up big screens in the city to broadcast the Salzburg Festival.
Improved infrastructure
More people have been brought on board to ensure a trouble-free preparation period. Decisions have been taken to improve the public transport facilities with a new tram stop to be erected near the stadium in Wals-Siezenheim. To cope with the excess demand, extra trams and a shuttle service will be used. In addition, the capacity of the impressive new stadium will be extended to 30,000 seats.
Excitement growing
After the fantastic World Cup in Germany, the excitement in the city is growing. I’m convinced that UEFA EURO 2008™ can repeat the success of the 2006 World Cup. In fact, I can’t wait!

post SALZBURG - FAN CAMP

There will be a fan camp in Salzburg as in every other host city. In contrast to the often expensive hotels and guesthouses it will offer cheaper overnight accommodation and also serves as a meeting and collection point for fans.
The fan camp is located at the Messezentrum Salzburg (Salzburg conference centre) and will be open from the 7th to the 19th of June. By car it can be reached directly from the Westautobahn (A1, Munich-Vienna). Do not forget your obligatory tax disc!
The fan camp is easily and quickly accessible by public transport.
There are approx. 4 kilometres between the camp and both the stadium and the Fanmeile (fan fest), which is a comfortable walk. Again it is about 4 kilometres from the stadium to Salzburg airport and to the Hauptbahnhof, which is a short and convenient trip on public transport.
