Manchester United and England’s Owen Hargreaves has admitted he will not be paying much attention to this summer’s European Championship and also reflected the Three Lions’ win over the United States on Wednesday…
Steve McClaren infamously failed to guide England to the Austria-Switzerland showpiece and now many of the world’s biggest and best-paid names will be watching this summer’s action from afar.
Many of England’s stars have expressed their disappointment at not being involved in recent weeks and, naturally, Hargreaves is no different.
“I definitely won’t be in Austria or Switzerland. And I don’t think I will enjoy watching it, apart from maybe the semi-finals and final,” admitted the versatile, Canadian-born midfielder.
“I will keep an eye on a few team-mates and friends but I don’t think I’ll get a lot of satisfaction watching, knowing we should probably be there.”
Reflecting on the 2-0 win over USA on Wednesday, Hargreaves is sure that they could have won by a greater margin, but believes the team played well.
“We could have scored more against the USA,” he insisted. “But I think the things he [Capello] wanted us to do, which were switching play and making runs in behind, we did.
“You’ll have to ask the manager if he’s happy. We won at home. He seemed rather pleased.
“I think you have to [experiment], as he’s trying to find out the best team. We have all the pieces of the puzzle. We just have to make them fit.”
