DIEGO BENAGLIO PROFILE - SWITZERLAND PLAYERS AT EURO 2008
June 2nd, 2008
Diego Benaglio (born 8 September 1983) is a Swiss football (soccer) player who currently plays as a goalkeeper for VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.
Benaglio started his career with his Grasshoppers Zürich and played there for several seasons before moving to Germany to join VfB Stuttgart. After a brief period there, he joined CD Nacional. On the summer of 2006, it was rumored that Sevilla FC was to sign him - apparently the Spaniards intended to send him on loan to Second Division Real Valladolid - the player’s refusal seems to have stopped the transfer and became first choice at CD Nacional Madeira as Henrique Hilário left for Chelsea FC.
Benaglio is a member of the Switzerland national team and was called up to the squad in the 2006 World Cup. In the Swiss National team he was the number 3 goalie behind Pascal Zuberbühler and Fabio Coltorti.
For the 2008 EM in his home country, he was made the number 1 goalie by Kobi Kühn in beginning of 2008.
On January 22, 2008 he moved to VfL Wolfsburg. On his debut he made it possible for his team to advance to the next round of the Dfb-Pokal, the german football associations cup.
